Default Build Advice for Monk Newbie

Hi,

Started playing the PvE version, and have got my monk to the dizzy heights of level 2 (w00t) I've read the guide on attribute points and am being hassled by various NPCs to get a second profession.

Given that Monks appear to be healers, it looks like its worth putting points into the primary attribute. What difference does this make from putting points into the healing attribute as they both seem to benefit healing?

I though that it might be better to drop a few points in smiting for a bit of emergency countermeasures in the event that I get attacked.

Given that I should stay out of combat as much as possible, it it worthwhile making my second class ranger or something to get a ranged weapon, or would I be better off as an elementalist to throw a few fireballs around?

Having read the attribute guide, it looks like I should be aiming for a 10/10/9/7 or 10/10/8/8 split. Which would be best to do, three in the monk attributes and one in the secondary, or split them two and two?

Thanks in advance for any advice or directions to other links/articles.
